Bringing home a new baby is an exciting, life-changing event for any family. But if you've already got an older sibling in the mix, the transition can feel especially daunting. How do you help your firstborn navigate the shift from only child to big kid with all the new responsibilities that come with it?

Don't worry, mamas - I've got you covered with 5 foolproof tips to prep your older child for a new baby brother or sister:

Tip #1: Talk About the Baby...

A Lot The more familiar your older child is with the idea of a new sibling, the smoother the adjustment will be. Start talking about the baby early and often - show them ultrasound photos, let them feel your growing belly, and read children's books that explain what a newborn is like. Encourage them to ask questions and share their feelings, both the good and the bad. Honesty and openness is key.

Tip #2: Involve Them in Activities

Get your big kid excited about their "big kid" status by letting them help prepare for the baby's arrival. Have them pick out a special gift, decorate the nursery, or organize hand-me-down clothes. Let's dive into the details on why this window is ideal, as well as some other factors to consider when planning your maternity photo shoot.

Why the 28-34 Week Range Works Best During the second trimester (around 28 weeks), most expectant moms have a beautifully defined baby bump that's the perfect canvas for creative, flattering photos. You'll likely have plenty of energy and mobility at this stage, making it easier to try different poses and locations.

Waiting until the third trimester (after 34 weeks) can present some challenges. Many women experience increased fatigue, swelling, and discomfort as their due date approaches. A lengthy photo session may feel more draining. Plus, your belly could get so large that certain angles and poses become difficult.

Getting great photos of kids can be a real challenge. One minute they're all smiles and giggles, and the next they're melting down into a puddle of tears. As a professional photographer, I've had my fair share of challenging kiddo photo sessions. But over the years, I've picked up some tricks to help keep meltdowns at bay and make sure everyone has an enjoyable experience. Here are my top 8 tips:

1. Schedule wisely. Kids do best when they're well-rested and not hungry. Schedule photo sessions for a time of day when your child is typically at their best - for many kids that's earlier in the day. And make sure they've had a good snack or meal ahead of time.
2. Get them excited. In the days and hours leading up to the session, start talking about it in an upbeat, positive way. Let them know it's going to be a fun experience where they get to play dress up and be thestar of the show.
3. Bring backup. Have a bag of tricks on hand to redirect attention and defuse meltdowns. Bring snacks, water, their favorite toy or book, music to dance to - whatever works best for your child.
4. Let them warm up. Don't expect kids to start performing right away. Give them time to get comfortable with the photographer and setting before jumping into posed shots.
5. Keep it moving. Once you start shooting, keep things lively with games, songs, and genuine enthusiasm. The quicker you can capture a variety of looks and angles, the better.
6. Take breaks. Even with older, more veteran models, shooting in short bursts works best. Give kids frequent breaks to recharge.
7. Manage expectations. While getting that "perfect" shot is ideal, sometimes you have to settle for less-than-perfect but still adorable. Don't put too much pressure on kids (or yourself!).

8 Month Baby Milestones

At 8 months your baby will most likely meet some of the following milestones.

• Makes sounds back when talked to
• Passes objects from one hand to the other
• Picks up objects between the thumb and forefinger (pincer grasp)
• Pulls into a standing position near furniture
• Recognizes familiar faces
• Rocks back and forth on hands and knees
• Sits unassisted
• Understands basic words

At This Age

• Development: At this age, babies are becoming very mobile. Not only are they moving in some way—possibly even crawling—they also are becoming more vocal making different vowel and consonant sounds as well as responding with inflection based on their mood.
• Sleep: Babies this age are sleeping around 14 hours total, with 10 to 11 of those hours occurring at night. They also are taking about two naps a day.3

• Food: By the time your baby is 8 months old, they are probably nursing or taking a bottle about three to five times a day as well as eating a mixture of solid foods.4 How much your baby eats depends on their interest and preference. Don't force your baby to eat food that they are not interested in.

7-month-old baby milestones:

• Rolling over from front to back and back to front
• Sitting up without any help
• Improved eyesight, can track moving objects more easily and see things that are farther away
• Improved hand coordination
• Understanding language
• Social play
• Supporting their weight

Other infant development milestones for a 7- to 9-month-old include sitting, standing and laughing. From age four to seven months, babies learn to coordinate their emerging perceptive abilities and their increasing motor abilities to develop skills like grasping, rolling over, sitting up, and possibly even crawling.

Some of the milestones that a 4-month-old baby may reach include:

• Smiling

Photographing 4m babies

• At 4months babies become keen to explore their surroundings
• They are more likely to be distracted by what's going on around them. Their attention span is very limited and getting them to look into the camera is more challenging.
• Their vision is developing so they will be interested in bright colours and objects.

• They are becoming more active and stronger, and will start to roll from tummy to back.
• Typical posing at this age is on their front with their head up and rolling on their back.

They have reached a number of milestones, such as tracking objects with their eyes, reaching and grasping for things with their hands, and pushing up on their arms when lying on their tummy. • Development: Your baby will start to recognize you from farther distances, and will now be able to start lifting their head and chest up from a belly-down position.
• Food: The length between feedings has stretched out and you may have a more predictable feeding routine.4
• Sleep: More of your baby’s sleep happens at night now, and your baby may start sleeping longer stretches at night—some babies are even sleeping through the night.

Bumps to Babies: Photographing the first year of a baby's life:

2 month Milestones
❤️Their first genuine smiles
❤️Most two-month-olds have two to four long sleep periods and as many as 10 hours a day when they’re awake.
❤️Movements are less jerky, they can now coordinate their movements better, in smoother, more circular motions.
❤️They are also able to grab objects voluntarily

Photographing a 2 month old requires patience and speed. They have a very short attention span and so you need to make sure all the setup are planned in advance. Typical photos at this age will be of baby lying down, taking adorable headshots of all the baby's unique expressions and geniuine smiles. Sometimes we can half swaddle the baby as in these photos or fullt wrap if the baby is smaller. Dressing in outfits and letting baby stretch out. The adorable hammock pose is a parent favourite. We can also use, beds, crates and flokatis to create a wide variety.

At this age the hands and legs are stronger and will be moving constantly. I always incorporate a lots of parents hand in the photos at this age. Parent and Sibling phtoos are always included

Bumps to Babies: Photographing the first year of a baby's life: 1 month

Your 1-month-old is still a sleepy newborn adjusting to the world, but by the end of the month your little one may be much more alert and engaged. Your baby loves to hear your voice and see your face, and even recognizes your smell. Sleeping, eating, and pooping around the clock is your baby's job now. It's exhausting to live on a 1-month-old's unpredictable schedule, but take heart – you're learning your baby's hunger and sleep cues and are on your way to an easier routine.

1-month-old milestones

Milestones for a 1-month-old vary a lot, especially if your baby was born early. So, keep in mind that there can be a wide range of when your baby will meet milestones. It doesn't necessarily mean that something is wrong if your baby hasn't met a milestone yet, especially at this age. But be sure to attend your baby's doctor visits and stay in touch with your baby's care provider so you can address any concerns early on.

Here are a few of the milestones your 1-month-old baby may reach:

• Facial expressions. Your baby may not be able to talk yet, but that little face sure is telling you a lot. You'll see your baby experimenting more with different facial expressions – pursing their lips, raising their eyebrows, widening or squinting their eyes, and furrowing their brow.
• Smell recognition. This one has been present since birth: Your baby can recognize your scent, and if you're nursing, the unique smell of your breast milk.
• Responding to loud noises. Your baby will respond to loud noises by acting startled or crying, just like older babies. (If you notice that your 1-month-old doesn't react to loud noises, tell your baby's doctor.)
• Mature hearing. Your baby's hearing is fully developed. They can hear everything you can, and will even turn towards familiar voices and sounds. Your baby recognizes your voice and your partner's voice, and may even stop crying to listen when you speak!
• Reflexes. All of the newborn reflexes – including the startle, rooting, sucking, and grasping reflexes – are still going strong. Most newborn reflexes disappear when your baby is about three months old.
• Better eyesight. Your baby's eyesight is continuing to improve. You may notice that your baby's eyes cross occasionally – that's normal. Babies this age enjoy looking at high-contrast patterns, especially black and white, because they're easiest for them to see. Your baby also loves to see your face. When you hold your baby close – about 8 to 12 inches from your face – your baby can focus on it.
• Head control. Your baby's neck muscles are getting stronger, and they may be able to hold their head up for brief moments. When practicing tummy time, your baby may even be able to lift their head and turn it from side to side.

How long is a mini photo session?

A mini session is a smaller version of the photo experience you normally provide to clients. They usually take anywhere between 15 to 30 minutes.

How many photos are in a mini photo session?
In a 30-minute photography session, you could get around 25 photos to choose between, in a shorter themed shoot 15-minute session it will be , around 15 images, whereas from a 1-hour shoot you should expect 40-50 pictures to look through. 
 

How long should it take to get pictures back from a photographer mini session?

Galleries will be sent within a week of your session.

As the Festive season approaches, there’s nothing quite like the magic of Christmas to bring warmth and joy to our homes. For families with young children, creating cherished memories during this time of year is a heartwarming tradition.  So, gather your little ones close, because we’re about to embark on a magical journey of Christmas activities right in the comfort of your home.

Deck the Halls

The first step to a memorable Christmas is decorating your home together as a family. Let your little elves assist in hanging baubles, stringing up lights, and adorning the Christmas tree. Don’t forget to blast some classic carols in the background to set the mood. Watching their faces light up as they place ornaments on the tree is priceless.  My top tip if you like your tree to look cor-ordinated and gorgeous and don’t trust your toddlers to meet the brief, is to give the kids their own tree to decorate.  Adding a smaller tree that’s just for them, make it extra special for everyone!

Crafting Holiday Magic

Nothing says ‘Christmas’ like homemade decorations. Gather some crafting supplies, and get creative with your young ones. Create paper snowflakes, handprint reindeer, or even make your own Christmas cards. The possibilities are endless, and the fun is guaranteed.  There are tons of tutorials on Pinterest and YouTube so you’re bound to find something that takes your fancy.  My top tip is to avoid anything that includes glitter – you’ll be finding it until Easter.

Letter to Santa

Now, here comes a classic and heartfelt tradition – writing a letter to Santa Claus. Set up a cosy spot with pens, paper, and colourful stickers. Encourage your little ones to express their Christmas wishes and gratitude in their own words. It’s a beautiful way to teach them the spirit of giving and appreciation.  [Share something personal here for example… We have a log burner and our family tradition is to put the letters to Santa on the fire so they travel up the chimney to Santa].  There’s then nothing more beautiful than seeing their little faces when they actually receive a letter back from The North Pole.  I’ve created a beautiful Letter From Santa that you can print and then personalise with your child’s name.  These look so lovely when printed on some heavy card and tied in a scroll with a ribbon.

Baking Bliss

The aroma of freshly baked cookies and the warmth of a festive kitchen – what could be better? Involve your little ones in baking Christmas cookies or a gingerbread houses. Let them have fun decorating their culinary creations with icing, sprinkles, and all things sweet. These treats make perfect gifts for friends and family too!  Remember to take lots of photographs.  Baking and being in the kitchen are fantastic opportunities for smiling faces as well as messy fun.

Movie Night

Snuggle up with cosy blankets, hot chocolate, and a selection of classic Christmas movies. From “Home Alone” to “The Polar Express,” there’s no shortage of heartwarming films to enjoy together. It’s the perfect way to wind down after a busy day of festive activities.  Our personal favourite is HomeAlone and my kids love watching it together and always means Christmas has well and truly arrived

Advent Calendar Excitement

Counting down the days until Christmas has never been more exciting! There are so many different Advent Calendar options now, from sweet treats to toys.  It’s also a lovely tradition to have a ‘reverse advent calendar’  The way this works is to put 1 or 2 food items or treats in a box every day in the days leading up to Christmas Day.  you’ll end up with a lovely donation for your local food bank, which you can donate in the first week of January when lots of food banks struggle for donations.

Virtual Christmas Cheer

For those who can’t be with extended family this year, consider hosting a virtual Christmas gathering. Arrange a video call so that your loved ones can still share the magic of the season, even from afar. It’s a wonderful way to bridge the gap and spread some virtual hugs and smiles.

Bedtime Stories and Sweet Dreams

End the day with a Christmas bedtime story. Reading tales of festive adventures and Santa’s magical journey can fuel your children’s imaginations and ensure they go to bed with hearts full of wonder.

Autumn is such a beautiful time of year to be expecting a baby!  You don’t have to worry about the heat of summer but the weather is still mild enough to be able to get out and about with your new arrival.  You also have the added bonus that your baby will be more aware of their surroundings and the activities that will be going on over the winter.  You can look forward to their first Christmas in just a few short weeks!

As a professional portrait photographer, I’ve had the immense joy of capturing some of life’s most precious moments, and none are quite as magical as the arrival of a newborn. 3. Flexibility: We understand that babies operate on their own schedule. If your baby arrives earlier or later than expected, we will adjust your booking accordingly.
4. The Session: Our goal is to create a calm, soothing environment for your baby. We work at your baby’s pace, allowing plenty of time for feeding, changing, and comforting. Newborn safety and comfort are my top priorities.
5. After the Session: Once the session is over, we will work on perfecting your images. Then, we’ll arrange a viewing for you to select your favourite images. These can be turned into a variety of beautiful products such as prints, wall art, photo books, or a digital album.

2022 Baby Loss Awareness Project

As we enter Baby Loss Awareness Week 9-15th October once again, I'd like to invite you to share your story.

As a Mum to four Babies, and multiple rounds of IVF treament that didn't work, failed embryo transfers, and misscarrying in those early weaks. My last round in February I lost the babies around 6 weeks. It is important to me to do something every year to allow people to share their stories, as well as raise awareness to reach others like us.

This year I haven't been able to arrange a photo project, but I would like to invite you to share your story by filling out the form below. All stories will be shared on Baby Loss Awareness Day, October 15th.

Let me bust these 3 common Myths about Maternity Sessions

You have probably heard the saying "don't believe everything you read on the internet" and I'm here to tell you it's true. 
There are a lot of misconceptions about Maternity Sessions floating around out there and I want to set the record straight once and for all. So today I am on a mission to break some myths!
These are the top 3 most common myths about Maternity photography:

Myth #1: It's P*rn, if you show your bump and naked body 

One of the most common myths about Barely There Maternity photography is that it’s p*rn. This is simply not true! Maternity photography is about empowering women to love themselves and their bodies, they are creating the miracle of life and this needs to be celebrated not hidden away in baggy clothes. My clients love to show their naked form and I create flattering, discreet images that show the beautiful pregnant body in all its natural forms. The photos I create are an artistic portrayal of beauty, using beautiful scarves, fabrics, flattering lighting to create an artistic image just like the old masters painting. Theyr are not considered p*rnographic, maternity photography is its own form of artistic expression.

Myth #2: It Needs to be for Someone Else 

While maternity photos make a great gift for the mamas-to-be, these sessions are not solely for the benefit of others. Maternity photography is all about loving who you are, and each photo is about celebrating you and telling your unique story of your pregnancy. Whether this baby is your first, last , longed for after many years of trying or failed IVF attempts. It may be a rainbow baby, You may have had the strength to try again after an infant loss to create your miracle rainbow baby. Every pregnancy has its own unique story. If you want to share that celebration with someone, great! If you’re booking a maternity session as a present for yourself, that’s equally great!

Myth #3: You Need the Perfect Body
 
Every body is perfect for a maternity photo session. There is no ‘right’ type when it comes to women’s maternity portraits—this is all about loving your one-of-a-kind self. Whether you’re curvy, petite or anywhere in between, you deserve beautiful photographs of yourself!

I believe there is not a moment more magical than when a baby is born. It is an honor to be a part of capturing this amazing process and documenting one of the most incredibly special times in your life! My job in photographing your newborn goes far beyond just snapping a few shots with a camera; I strive to capture a unique moment in time and all the amazing emotions along with it. It’s my greatest hope that the photos from your session will become a family treasure.

I’ve put together this guide based on my many years of experience photographing newborns. Here I share some of my “tricks of the trade” to increase the chances of getting those beautiful, doll-like images everyone goes absolutely crazy for. I’ve included information on booking and timing, what to wear, how to prepare a room, how to get your baby ready, and more! Of course, as we get closer to your due date and session I will reach out with more reminders and tips. You are always welcome to contact me with questions!

1. Book session 2-4 months before your due date

As soon as your baby comes, it’s going to be non-stop late nights and hard work (seriously, I’ve been there)! Coordinating a photo session might seem like the last thing on your list of priorities. This is why I recommend booking your session at least 2-4 months in advance of your due date to make sure everything is lined up ahead of time and you don't have to worry or scramble for last-minute plans!

2. Session is Best before 21 days ideally under 14 days

Once your baby is home safe and sound, please contact me immediately to let me know the wonderful news (it’s totally fine to have a helping friend / family member set things up too)! I will work closely with you to find a day and time that works for everyone. It’s very important to remember and plan for the fact that newborns are best photographed under 2 weeks of age; the ideal timing before 14 days.

3. Prepare the day before

The day before your shoot, please do not schedule any vaccinations for your baby. I want that beautiful baby skin to be smooth and creamy, and  sometimes shots can cause a minor skin reaction or leave a mark. Additionally, I recommend playing with your baby as much as possible and keeping them awake more than usual so they’ll be tired out for photo day - which is what we need to get the best photos!

4. Getting that creamy, perfect skin

I can’t stress enough how it important it is not to use tight-fitting nappies, straps or elastic on your baby the day of the shoot! I’ve seen so many  tight-fitting diapers and elastic outfits cause marks on baby’s skin, and it allllll shows up right there on camera! Ahhh! So the day of the shoot, avoid anything tight-fitting to make sure your baby’s skin looks natural and beautiful for the photos.

5. Keep to your normal routine before session

I highly recommend keeping to your normal routine, having a baby is stressful enough and I don't want to to do anyting extra. I want to take the pressure of you and and not give you lots of tasks to do. This will help you be and so helps baby stay sleepy and calm during the shoot, and increases the probability of getting those adorable, sleeping doll-like images everyone goes crazy for. 

6. A full feed & nappy change at the studio

Have your baby fully fed and changed before the session. This increases chances of sleep and greatly decreases chances of fussiness! Everyone wins. I wil always ask you to fed the baby when you arrive at the studio so baby has a full belly before we start the session.

7. The perfect setting

Getting your room just right for our photoshoot is a big part of making the photos a huge success! I recommend trying for the following:

● Turn up the heat! Temperatures should be 88 + degrees - like a sauna!
● Try to create a quiet and relaxing environment free from noise and distractions
● Sometimes a fan or white noise maker can help your baby sleep soundly and feel comfortable

8. A few moments alone with baby

For posed sessions, I ask that parents watch from the sofas nearby while I pose and photograph your sleeping newborn. Parents are wonderful, but can be distracting for baby (and let’s face it - sometimes for me, too!). I will call you in immediately if baby needs something or I need your help supporting or watching the baby for safety - which he or she probably will!

9. Parents should wear layers

We’ve turned up the heat for baby, but mom should be comfortable too! I
always tell my clients to dress in layers during the shoot in case things get
a little too warm. Being comfortable is key to beautiful, natural images!

10. Checklist of what to bring

Setting out things ahead of time helps things go more smoothly during the shoot.

These are my top items to have handy during a shoot:

● Extra milk or formula or pumped breast milk in a bottle 
● Extra nappies
● Wet wipes
● Pacificer/Dummy
● Snacks and drinks for mum
● Any special blankets, outfits, hats or prop (Please discuss any special props with photographer beforehand)

 How long of a session do I need?

Not sure how much time you need for your custom senior session? You’ve come to the right place! We’re here to help you figure out the perfect length for your photo shoot. We currently offer three slots: 30 minutes, one hour, and one to two hours.

● 10-20 minutes: I offer short, quick themed mini sessions such as Christmas, Valentines day or Easter. These sessions are typically one choice of backdrop or setup and require clients to be dressed ready for their session. To make these sessions profitable they are booked with clients booked back-to-back on one day, so clients need to be on time or they risk losing their spot or their session time cut. Galleries provided tend to be no more than 10 images to choose from and packages typically are 3, 5 or 10 images. Prices of mini session range from £199-250 plus the option to add on products and additional images to their package

● 30 minutes: This half hour session is great if you just need some basic photos to document you during your pregnancy or to capture baby's milestones through their first year. You will be allowed one outfit and one outdoor location for this session. We can do a variety of poses and variation of images in this time and we’ll still get some awesome photos!

This allotted time is suitable for Solo portrait sessions, This type of photo session is quite popular with baby milestone, Motherhood sessions, and maternity. If done within a studio, 30 minutes allotted for the session will suffice. I normally to not offer outdoors – which is much more preferred by clients for family sessions– this session takes more or less an hour.

● 1 hour: This session will allow us some more time to get creative. This is suitable for family sessions and Mini Newborn sessions and outdoor where you need more time to settle and pose babies and young children. It also give you more time for the children to warm up to the camera. We can add in another setup and up to two additional outfits. This is our most popular option.

A typical family session is a great example of a 60min session, depending on the number of participants, this can take anywhere from 1 to 1.5 hours.

● 1 to 2 hours: This is the ultimate Family or Newborn & Family session, including siblings. It allows for up to four outfit changes, three setup or location changes, and you’ll have time for hairstyle changes and adding in pets or friends.

Newborn session can takes as much as 2 hours or even more because you want to allow enough time for baby feeding, nappy changing, and letting the baby fall asleep. It’s important to book the shoot around the baby’s natural feeding and nap times so you can set up the best photographic situations for the baby. If you want to include sibling photos these take more take to setup and organise and persuade young children to be photographed with their new sibling. It also take more time editing family photography, creating composites of baby and sibling, as safety is the most important thing than getting the shot. it may be that the newborn baby and young sibling are photographed separately and then combined in photoshop to create a finished image.

Are you thinking about Mother's day gifts? Let's face it, mum's don't appear in pictures enough - we are usually the ones holding the cameras! That's why I've pulled together these options for Mothers day this year
 

Mini Sessions: What is a Mini Session?

A Mini Session is a petite version of our regular sessions.

You will receive up to 20 minutes for your session, and depending on your package 5-15 images, and a set of 3 accordion mini albums. You can share you digital images on social media and share with friends and family. You will also get a fun family experience, AND save “50% off our regular session fees!

All mini sessions include up to three people. Big family? Consider booking additional time slots.

You receive a online gallery approx 2 weeks after your session. It will involve going through your photos to choose your favourite, and discussing any add-ons (additional prints/digital files) you may wish to purchase.

What Should We Wear To Our Mini Session?
 

There are no set-in-stone rules for what to wear, but there are some things that seem to work (and not work) across the board. 

Here are our best tips for your Mini Session wardrobe:

Patterns/logos/text/characters should generally be avoided - they are too distracting! The focus of the photo should be your smiling faces, not the character or patterns on your shirt. It's best to stick to basics- simple cuts and simple color schemes. If you want to stand out a bit more, consider textures instead of patterns- a chunky cable knit sweater, a bright woven scarf, etc.

Match if you want to, don't if you don't! Some say matchy-matchy photos are passé, but if it suits your family's style and personalities, go for it! Don't feel like you have to show up in matching outfits, though. As long as everyone is in the same general color scheme (or colors that contrast in a visually appealing manner), and you all agree that you look great standing together in the mirror prior to the session, all will be just fine! 

Solid black or white can appear too harsh, blown out/lacking in detail, so try to select colors. Jewel tones and neutrals are always lovely. 

Pick clothing that will have a timeless feel for years to come on your wall. Also, keep in mind the theme of the Mini Session when choosing your clothing.

Think about your home palette. Dress in colours and style that reflect your home, so that your photo(s) will fit right in and reflect the energy and decor!

Mini Sessions: What Else Do I Need to Know?

Wear natural, minimal makeup and styled, but not over styled hair.

Do a quick spot check on everyone right before your session. Clean hair, faces, teeth and clothing, etc!

No-shows will not be refunded or re-scheduled.

Because Mini Sessions are quick and are scheduled back to back, the day is crammed full. We ask that you arrive 10-15 minutes before your allotted time. If even one person runs late, everyone's session is affected. Please be early and ready for your closeup!

Payment must be made in advance in order to book your space.

You may choose to pay an additional fee of £99 for an upgrade to a regular session at a different time.

The Best indoor games to play with our kids - Cambridge family photography

While it's always best to play outside outside come rain or shine (there’s no better way to turn a bad day around) a UK winter doesn’t give you a lot to work with…especially when it rains. So if you’re looking at staying indoors for any length of time, my edit of best indoor games should keep you occupied. Some games you can play as a family while some can be played alone – if only for long enough to give you a sweet minute to sit down and drink that warm coffee by yourself. We normally do a family photoshoot every year but sadly this year my husband is deployed - he’s been away for 3 months and won’t be home until October. So this year it’ll just me and our 16 month old James! I’m so looking forward to you capturing some lovely moments of the two of us and I will definitely be sending copies to my husband. " Hannah

I love this family. Hannah is married to an American serviceman who was stationed over seas and she reached out to me for my Summer Family Minis as she wanted some portraits with her son while he was still little. She wanted outdoor wildflowers and fields and said she would love to be photographed beside a lake or water. I thought I have the perfect location in Cambridge. Lockdown had a bit impact and Mum just wanted to celebrate these moments with her son and family and reconnect with the love she has for the summer, outdoors and the fun times with her son and I think we created the most beautiful photos for her.    

We have the most fun and I love how Hannah's dress and James's baby's outfit is just so perfect with the natural environment of the fields, woods, and lake. Outdoor sessions with toddlers can be tricky  but with the right tips and tricks up our sleeve anything is possible! There was definitely may have bribed James with some snacks for those smiles ;-) But it is totally worth it! James is so cute and Hannah has these beautiful images that will last forever to celebrate the end of lockdown and I loved this session!

You’ve spent almost 9 months planning for the arrival of your newborn.  Those 9 months of pregnancy might just be the longest months of your life.  It seems like your due date will never arrive. Then the day actually arrives and your long-awaited baby is at last nestled in your arms. Next thing you know, someone presses fast forward on your life and the following 12 months are the fastest you’ll ever experience.

Your First Few Weeks

People will tell you the first few weeks are just like being in a bubble.  A beautiful new baby bubble. And it’s true. Rainbow Baby Mini Sessions

Baby Loss Awareness Week (9-15 Oct) is now in its 19th year.

Baby Loss Awareness Week is a wonderful opportunity to bring us together as a community and give anyone touched by pregnancy and baby loss a safe and supportive space to share their experiences and feel that they are not alone.

This year I am hosting Rainbow baby mini sessions to celebrate those special children that have bought so much joy to their families. 

These Mini Sessions are for Wednesday 13th October 10-1200pm and have a very special theme. Although you are more than welcome to book if your little one is not a Rainbow Baby, this is to celebrate those who are.

A Rainbow Baby is a Baby born after a loss and 1 in 4 pregnancies sadly end in loss during pregnancy or birth. To celebrate these special children who make us feel unbelievably lucky, £5 of every deposit paid to book a slot for these Minis will go to Petals https://petalscharity.org/ A charity who's mission is to provide and promote specialist counselling for parents across the UK following baby loss.

These Themed Minis are up to 15 Minutes Long and require a £35 non-refundable deposit to book and secure your slot. This covers the session time and the editing of your images. The remaining balance of your chosen package to be paid a week before your session. An invoice will be emailed to you. Siblings and Family are welcome with a maximum of 4 people from one family

I love how my mams wear these gowns and it makes them feel confident, beautiful and stunning It means my clients don't need to think about what to wear and I can make sure the gown and the stying compliment each other. How to Prepare for Your Maternity Photography Session

1. Schedule your session early. I Advise to book you maternity session from your 20 week scan so that you can guarantee a spot.
2. Plan to book a shoot for your third trimester. I advise between 28-32 when you are visibly pregnant but not so tired.
3. Talk to your photographer about your desires.

This is our first year offering Halloween mini sessions for all of our clients! We love everything spooky (Not scary like a horror film or zombie invasion haha! Just some festive Halloween fun for the kids to remember this important milestone in your childhood

Come join us for our mini sessions and take the stress out of Halloween. You won’t have to worry about rushing to get them ready before the sun sets so you can get good pictures, while they’re impatient and itching to get started trick or treating. About the Session itself...

These Themed Minis are up to 15 Minutes Long and require a £45 non-refundable deposit to book and secure your slot. Siblings and Family are welcome with a maximum of 4 people from no more than 1 households. For cousin groups book a 2 sessions back to back and we can do joint photos at the end

If you are unsure of any of the Products included in the packages, they are on the products page on this website!

Within a few days of your Session, you will receive an online choosing gallery to choose your included images and purchase extra if you wish to. If you would like to buy extra images these will be £35 each. You are also welcome to purchase any of my physical products as long as the digital download version has been chosen/purchased.

My editing timescale is 2 weeks which begins once your images have been chosen, and any extras paid for.

Here are some great Halloween Costume Ideas

Do you love the thought of having amazing family photos to hang on your wall and share to your family and friends but dread the thought of a photosession. Moody Husband/Partner, grump un-cooperative kids, sweat rolling down your back while you try to smile and keep your cool?

You’re not alone!

I send a guide to my clients to help them prepare their kids for their photo session so I’m going to share some of my best tips for you, too!

1. Plan Ahead

The absolute best thing you can do to set yourself up for photo day success is to plan ahead. One of my favorite sayings ever is “Failure to prepare...prepare to fail.” haha It’s so true.

Make sure you map out your timeline correctly and allow for lots of wiggle room in your schedule for the unexpected things that come up.

If you think it will take you 20 minutes to drive to your sesison location? Plan for double. Traffic, unexpected toliet stops and getting lost all can cause you stress. YOu can even visit the location before hand so that you are familiar with the parking and meeting points

Think it’ll take 90 minutes to do your hair and makeup and get the family ready? Plan for at least two hours. Make sure you also check for traffic and road closures before you leave your house.

Pack your bag of supplies the night before. Extra water for everyone, healthy snacks for the kids, and little treats for bribery. It works! Fruit snacks are great because they’re small and don’t melt in your hands or pockets. Just say no to Chocolate Buttons at least until the session is done 

If your kids are still of napping age, you’ll also need to plan your day around naps so you don’t have to wake your kid up right before you have to leave the house. That’s almost a guarantee that you’ll end up with a tired grump kid during photos.

You may have to move the nap earlier in the day, which means your kids may need to wake up earlier that day, which means they may need to get to bed earlier the night before…you get the idea.

Try not to do any extensive physical activity the day before your session so you ahve full energy. Photo sessions can be very physical...lifting children, playing, running and playing games so make sure you are well rested and ready for a workout! lol

2. Have a good breakfast/ lunch

Depending on you session time make sure you have a good meal before your session. If your kids have not eaten andyou just bring a small and/or unhealthy snack it will leave your kids still feeling hungry or could even lead to a sugar crash in the middle of your session.

A healthy, hearty snack will give them the energy they need to run around be themselves. 

Whole wheat toast with peanut butter, cereals, bananas, and grapes, raisins are great slow release engery foods…just make sure they eat before they get dressed 

3. No Screen Time

It’s well known that screens affect kids’ moods and temperament, so if you can limited or avoid all screen time (phones, tablets, TV, etc.) for the entire day or, at the very least, 4-5 hours leading up to your session will lead to happier kids

4. Tell Your Kids What Your Expectations Are

Kids just want to make their grown-ups happy. If you’re clear about your expectations with your kids, then the entire experience will be more smooth and enjoyable. Use phrases like, “We’re getting ready to meet __________ (your photographer’s name) to take some family photos. We will be there for _______ minutes and I expect you to be a good listener, to have some fun, and follow directions. If you do these things then it will be a fun and easy time! If you’re having a hard time, just let me know and we can take a break for a drink or snack.

5. Give Necessary Information to Your Photographer

I love to send a questionaire to my clients so I can get to know you and the needs of your family. If you have a child with special needs, a sensory processing disorder, developmental or cognitive delays, please let your photographer know several days before your session. Be as specific as needed to help your photographer feel prepared to meet your child.

For example, if your child is shy and need time to warm up, or responds to games and instructions. 

Or if your child gets easily overwhelmed around people with high energy, it will be best for your photographer to be as calm and gentle as possible.

Another thing that may be helpful for your photographer to know is if you are a blended family. If Noah’s dad is married to Clare, and Noah calls her by her name and not “Mum,” then this is helpful for the photographer to know when giving direction to the family. We always want to create a comfortable environment for everyone.

6. Plan a Special Treat or Event

Maybe everyone can go out to dinner or have a special takeaway after your session, or you could organise to stay longer at the location to have some family fun...have some icecream or organise a softplay , a trampoline park the next day. Think of it as giving the children a reward for a job well done!

7. Have Realistic Expectations

It won’t go perfectly.  Give your family a break and give yourself a break. Accept your children for how they are that day and embrace the chaos of family life. Photos are to document all aspects of your family. If you give off unhappy energy, the children wil feel that too. Love your kids for who they are in that moment. Even if they don’t want to smile or be held.

Put yourself in their shoes...Mum is rushing around, gettign everyone dressed, trying to match outfits, kids cant find their shoes, baby has taken off their nappy and trousers. Mum and dad are stressed. Dad is thinking about all those jobs he wants to do this weekend and has to get his photos taken. . They’re rushing to get you out of the car because they’re running late, you’re at a place you’ve never been before and someone you’ve never seen before is trying to make you smile and laugh while holding a big black camera in front of his/her face. Its cold, hot, raining or windy and all you want to do is go back home and play Minecraft! I don’t know about you but I would feel incredibly overwhelmed in that moment, too.

You see where planning ahead and trying to stay calm will really help, right?

YES!

Kids feed off their parents’ energy. If you’re stressed and anxious, your kids will be too. Do your best to relax and enjoy the moment. The whole point of getting portraits taken is to cherish these family memories. They are unique to your family. No family is the same and every memory is precious

I loved that Mum chose this beautiful floral watercolour backdrop for Elowyn's 1st Birthday Session. I decided to keep the setup simple. I use the Ezee Fabric background system from Graceland designs and it is so fantastic and it so easy for me to set up and give 2 themes. A simple portrait session in the sweetest pink before the cake and mess for some 1st birthday portraits that are timeless to hang on the wall. This little one had the biggest smile the whole time.

The Outfits are from my Client closet which is my special service to my clients. I can style your session for you so the outfit matching and co-ordinates perfectly. FINAL THOUGHTS

I know I’ve given you a lot to think about. Remember, in spite of everything else, the most important thing for you to remember is to just enjoy your family. Let this be a time that you have fun with each other, tell silly stories, and laugh a lot!  At the end of the day, it won’t matter nearly as much if you were having a bad hair day, if the location was perfect or not, or if your kids weren’t listening to your every word. You will look back on these pictures and remember these fleeting moments, and how quickly they went. I’m so honored to document this precious time for you!

CHOOSING YOUR LOCATION

The location of your portrait session is up to you! I have several favorite spots that I am always happy to recommend, and always love to showcase the natural beauty of our area. I love shooting in natural, wide open spaces because the light is gorgeous, especially in the evening. My urban settings are fun too, and add a sophisticated feeling to your session. You really can’t go wrong! If you have a specific location in mind for your session, I can’t wait to hear about it! Or maybe you have access to a special location that others do not. I always love when clients are able to secure a unique spot for their session! If you’re not sure where you’d like to have your session, no worries. We’ll decide together on the best spot for your family.

WHAT TO WEAR

One of the questions I am asked most frequently by my clients is “What should we wear?” And it’s no wonder! Your photos are an investment that you have most likely spent some time and money on, and besides adorning the walls of your home and probably your Christmas card, they will be passed down for generations to come. It is understandable that you want to look your best! I have compiled a few tips here that I am hoping will help you feel less overwhelmed when it comes time to pick out your wardrobe for your next photo session. Keep in mind that these are all just ideas! You certainly do not have to implement ALL of them… or ANY of them for that matter! The most important thing is that your photos are a reflection of YOU. But if you’re feeling stuck, or just need some inspiration, here are a few tips to guide you.
 

STYLE TIPS FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY
 

I often encourage mum to decide on her outfit first, and then build out the rest of the family’s clothing from there. Find something to wear that makes you feel beautiful! If you feel good in what you are wearing, it will transfer to your photos. Being comfortable and confident will make a huge difference in how we feel and how relaxed we are in front of the camera.
