Did your baby make the top 10? Click here to view the most popular names of 2020

I have 4 children and I have different experiences of when the time came to name them. With my firstborn twins I had chosen their names early on in the pregnancy. I had always loved the name Zachary for a boy and I stumbled across Violet and I thought it was so pretty. My husband and I couldn't agree,  he wanted Alistair and Julia and I was not so keen. When I gave birth and my husband was in the throes of paternal love, the midwife said. "What shall we call them...I said Zachary and Violet"...my husband said ok...hahaha. So we have Zachary Alistair and Violet Maria

With my third child, we couldn't agree on a name and my husband didn't like any names I liked. I liked the name Theodore so I could shorten to Teddy. In the end my husband suggested his name, Edmund, as he said there weren't many Edmunds in the world and I agreed. With our fourth baby I think we had ran out of names and inspiration! I loved the name Auden for a boy and Iris for a girl. We were in the recovery ward...frantically looking through the baby name app, trying to agree on a name. Then my husband was holding him and starting calling him Ben. I have no idea where the name came from. He looked at me and I said...I like it. So sometimes you need to see the baby when it is born and some name come to you. Divine Inspiration. I would love to know your story in the comments below!

Picking the perfect name can be one of the most difficult decisions parents have to make.

Here are my top 5 tips to help you get it right.

  1. Avoid passing trends - I was always advised when you name your baby you need to think will the name stand the test of time. will this name suit them when they are an adult professional or older citizen. Is it a ridiculous spelling  Will my child have to spell or explain their name every single day of their lives? If the answer to any of these questions is “yes”, consider passing on the name. You may be tempted to name after the most recent celebrity...but you will find that your name will be chosen by many other parents and so common in nursery or school and won't be unique
  2. Remember that classic names don't have to be boring. - Of course if your choose Charles, George or Mary you could consider this dull. But there are so many variations that are more unusual and unique
  3. Take a look at your family tree. - Another great way to inspire you is to look at your family tree... your mother's name, grandmother's name. People born in different generation have common names for that period and these vintage old fashion names can come back in fashion and become unique and also very sentimental to your family
  4. Honour your culture or nationality. A great way to include baby names is to choose names from your country of birth or culture. There are beautiful French names such as Elodie, or Lausanne, or Spanish names such as Sanitago or Mateo are just so unique. It is also so beautiful to incorporate special meaning family names
  5. Look up meanings. Not necessary important for some parent but sometimes the meaning of a name can resonate with you, you feel that the meaning is true to your struggle, or pregnancy or premature birth etc that you feel represents your baby and his personality. Some meaning are not so great. From sadness to devil worship, unluckiness to physical ailments, these name meanings are all outstanding in their terribleness. Cecilia means blind, Deirdre, this Celtic and Gaelic name unfortunately means "sorrowful" or "sad one". Keres, this Greek baby name means "evil spirits" – agghh! Thana sounds lovely but it actually means death in Arabic. Calvin is a french name and means bald!
