Whether you're planning a family session or just capturing a few milestone portraits, here's my guide to choosing the perfect girls’ spring photoshoot outfits.
🌿 Stick to Natural Fabrics
First and foremost: fabric matters. For photos, I always recommend natural materials. They photograph beautifully, breathe well, and have a softness that synthetics can’t replicate. Some great options include:
-
Cotton
-
Linen
-
Muslin
-
Swiss dot
-
Gauze
-
Chunky knits
-
Quilted cotton
Avoid polyester, rayon/viscose, or anything too shiny. These fabrics can look stiff or reflect light awkwardly, which distracts from your child’s face and the emotion of the image.
🌸 Choose Texture Over Shine
Texture adds depth and interest to your photos. Think of fluttery sleeves, pintucks, delicate embroidery, and soft quilting. These details catch the light in subtle ways and bring a vintage, timeless touch to portraits.
Skip the sparkles and tulle—while they might be adorable for parties or church, they rarely photograph well outdoors. Tulle in particular often appears harsh or artificial on camera, especially when paired with sunlight or natural backdrops.
🧵 Pay Attention to the Details
One way to instantly tell if an outfit will photograph well? Look closely at the details.
-
Does the stitching look neat?
-
Are the buttons thoughtfully chosen?
-
Is there a sense of quality in the construction?
If it looks like it came from a superarket store like Tesco or Priark, it probably won’t create the elevated feel you want for portraits. Those stores are perfect for everyday outfits—we all rely on them! But for photos, where every detail matters, it’s worth investing in pieces that look and feel special.
✅ Make Sure It Fits
It’s so tempting to buy clothes a little big so our kids can grow into them—but for photos, it’s best to choose pieces that fit just right. Oversized dresses or sleeves that hang too low can overwhelm your little one and look sloppy in photos. Well-fitted clothes allow her personality to shine without distraction.
🎀 Add a Bow (But Keep It Classy)
Bows are one of my favorite ways to finish off a look! Whether it’s a soft velvet clip or a linen tie, a bow adds just the right amount of charm.
-
Choose bows made from gauze, linen, or velvet
-
Stick to clips once girls have enough hair—avoid oversized stretchy headbands, especially on babies
-
Think soft, muted tones rather than bold, sparkly options
💗 Be Thoughtful with Color
Pink can be lovely—but it’s one of the hardest colors to get right in photos. Some shades wash out certain skin tones, while others clash with the natural tones in your surroundings. I tend to keep pinks out of my client closet unless I’ve found a shade I know works well on camera.
Instead, try:
-
Earthy neutrals (cream, tan, oat)
-
Soft pastels (sage, dusty blue, lilac)
-
Muted florals or checks
That said—if you find a pink outfit you love and your child feels amazing in it, trust your gut! Confidence always photographs well.
👖 Dresses Aren’t Required!
While dresses are always sweet and feminine, they’re absolutely not the only option. Some of my favorite photos have featured girls in:
-
Linen overalls
-
Paperbag waist shorts with a flowy blouse
-
Lightweight cotton jumpsuits
-
Muslin rompers for toddlers and babies
The most important thing is that your child is comfortable and the outfit reflects her personality. If she’s not a dress-loving kind of girl, don’t force it.
👟 Don’t Forget About Shoes
Shoes might be the most overlooked part of planning outfits, but they can totally make—or break—a look. Skip athletic trainers, flip-flops, Crocs, or any overly modern shoes unless they fit the aesthetic. Instead, consider:
-
Saltwater sandals (timeless and durable)
-
Hunter boots (great for moody spring days or puddle-loving toddlers)
-
Real leather cowboy boots (adorable for rustic vibes)
-
Classic white leather trainers (clean and minimal)
And if shoes are a struggle, barefoot is always an option—especially in grassy or beachy locations!
✨ Styling > Shopping
Here’s a little secret: it’s not always what you wear, but how you wear it. Styling makes all the difference. Even the simplest outfit can look polished with a few tweaks:
-
Add a bow or clip
-
Layer with a cardigan or vest
-
Cuff sleeves or roll pants for a relaxed look
-
Tuck in the blouse or tie it at the waist
-
Choose socks that match or complement the look
A well-styled outfit adds interest and keeps your images feeling intentional and cohesive.

Final Thoughts
At the end of the day, your little girl doesn’t need a fancy wardrobe to shine in photos. She just needs to feel comfortable, confident, and loved. The best outfits are the ones that let her be herself — whether that means twirling in a linen dress, giggling barefoot in a romper, or striking a pose in her favorite boots.
With just a little planning, you’ll create a look that enhances your session and helps tell your family’s story in the most beautiful way.
