Autumn Family Photo Session Outfits Ideas from Amazon

WELCOME!

I am so excited for your portrait session! Photographing families is my greatest joy, and I’m so honored to help you create and document memories that you will cherish for a lifetime. I’ve created this guide to help answer all of your questions so you feel completely ready for your session. Photos will always be the most meaningful art you own, and I want you to have the best experience possible! Your only job is to relax, be yourself and enjoy your family. I’ll take care of the rest! I can’t wait to get you in front of my camera!

WHAT TO WEAR

One of the questions I am asked most frequently by my clients is “What should we wear?” And it’s no wonder! Your photos are an investment that you have most likely spent some time and money on, and besides adorning the walls of your home and probably your Christmas card, they will be passed down for generations to come. It is understandable that you want to look your best! I have compiled a few tips here that I am hoping will help you feel less overwhelmed when it comes time to pick out your wardrobe for your next photo session. Keep in mind that these are all just ideas! You certainly do not have to implement ALL of them… or ANY of them for that matter! The most important thing is that your photos are a reflection of YOU. But if you’re feeling stuck, or just need some inspiration, here are a few tips to guide you.

STYLE TIPS FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY

I often encourage mum to decide on her outfit first, and then build out the rest of the family’s clothing from there. Find something to wear that makes you feel beautiful! If you feel good in what you are wearing, it will transfer to your photos. Being comfortable and confident will make a huge difference in how we feel and how relaxed we are in front of the camera.

Here are a few recommended pieces to get you started!

FOR MUM

Don’t be afraid to dress it up! Dresses are the most flattering for women, and photograph beautifully. Long dresses with movement add an extra touch of grace and elegance to your photos! Consider softer fabrics like chiffon or tulle for an extra romantic and classy feel. Adding in a statement accessory or two is a great way to finish the look, and these photograph beautifully. If you’re looking for a way to tie in your color pallette or to give a finishing touch to your outfit, statement accessories are always a win!

FOR DAD

Chinos and button-up shirts or henleys look sharp, masculine and tailored in photos. Keep in mind that fitted slacks or khakis, as opposed to cargo styles and jeans, look the most put together and photograph the best. Go ahead and mix it up by adding in a blazer, sport coat or vest, too! This is a great way to layer and add color or additional texture, and gives Dad’s outfit a nice handsome finish.

FOR THE KIDS

For the girls, dresses and skirts are always a go-to! Especially for those fun twirling pictures! And boys look fantastic in slacks, button-ups or henleys just like Dad. Little touches like hair accessories, bow ties and suspenders can add the perfect finishing touch to your photos. I always recommend trying the kid’s clothing on ahead of the session to make sure that it fits and they are comfortable in it. This can save a lot of headaches on picture day!

COORDINATING & COLORS

There is an old fashioned idea floating around that everyone in the picture needs to match. This is not true! Choose colors that look nice together, but don't fall into the trap that you all need to be wearing the exact same outfit or color. Coordinating is far better than matching. Your photos will be far more interesting with some variation!

I always recommend having at least three core colors in your palette. After you’ve selected your own outfit, take a look at the accent colors in it, and use those to tie in the outfits of everyone else. Keep it interesting by keeping each person’s primary color different. For example, if you are wearing a cream dress with blush accents/accessories and brown leather shoes (with your primary color being cream), your husband could wear navy slacks with a simple cream or blue shirt and tan blazer (his primary color being tan); one child could wear a blush dress with cream accents, and another could wear khaki slacks with a cream shirt and a navy vest.

FINISHING THE LOOK

When you’ve settled on the outfits for each person, you can start thinking about how to finish the look. Keep in mind that layers and accessories will always give you the most complete look. For the girls, consider adding a statement necklace, scarf, or hair pieces or headbands. For the boys, consider accessories such as a vest, belt, jacket, hat, suspenders, ties or bow ties. These are simple, but perfect ways to give a perfect finishing touch to your photos.

PLANNING FOR SUCCESS

PREPPING THE LITTLE ONES

Before your session, pack a bag with snacks and water, and any special lovies or toys the kids might need should they be feeling extra shy. Most of the time, it’s best they not know you have these so we only have to get them out if necessary. If they’re old enough to understand, it’s a good idea to prepare them for the session by explaining what we will be doing. Be sure to tell them we plan to have fun! It’s always a good idea to make sure everyone has full bellies before the session, so if they might be hungry, having a snack ahead of time is a great idea. A lot of families discuss a fun activity or treat to have together after pictures are done, too! Once you’ve prepared them mentally and physically, feel free to give them (and yourself!) grace. They’re little, and I know some days don’t go as planned. I’ve seen it all, so please don’t panic if your kids aren’t doing what you want them to… I know just how to get the shots I’m after, and have complete confidence we will get great photos. My goal is to make this as fun and stress-free as possible for you and your family!

PREPPING DAD

Let’s be honest, when it comes to having their photo taken, most guys could think of about a thousand things they’d rather be doing. But I have found that for most of them, the stress of pictures comes from the high expectations, the stress of the experience, and the worry about not doing it “right.” So it’s time to put your guy at ease.

Let him know that the best thing he can do is to just enjoy his family- and let ME do the work. The pressure is off. Show him a few of your favorite pictures from my website so he can see the relaxed nature of my work, and let him know how much this means to you, and that your glad he is willing to be such a team player for one hour! And of course, keep in mind that “rested and fed” applies to the grown-ups, too!

PREPPING YOURSELF

I know how important these pictures are to you! The best advice I can give you is to let go of your need for perfection. This is the biggest anxiety for most mums. It’s ok if your kids aren’t “perfect” during our time together. Remember that I’m very used to working with children, and I am most likely getting photos and glances and smiles you aren’t even seeing.

Be sure to give yourself enough time to prepare on session day, so you don’t feel rushed and anxious. Your family will follow your lead that day, so being as relaxed as you can will set the tone for everyone having a great time!

FINAL THOUGHTS

I know I’ve given you a lot to think about. Remember, in spite of everything else, the most important thing for you to remember is to just enjoy your family. Let this be a time that you have fun with each other, tell silly stories, and laugh a lot!  At the end of the day, it won’t matter nearly as much if you were having a bad hair day, if the location was perfect or not, or if your kids weren’t listening to your every word. You will look back on these pictures and remember these fleeting moments, and how quickly they went. I’m so honored to document this precious time for you!
