Bumps to Babies: Photographing the first year of a baby's life: 7 months

7-month-old baby milestones:

  • Rolling over from front to back and back to front
  • Sitting up without any help
  • Improved eyesight, can track moving objects more easily and see things that are farther away
  • Improved hand coordination
  • Understanding language
  • Social play
  • Supporting their weight

Other infant development milestones for a 7- to 9-month-old include sitting, standing and laughing. From age four to seven months, babies learn to coordinate their emerging perceptive abilities and their increasing motor abilities to develop skills like grasping, rolling over, sitting up, and possibly even crawling.

At around 7 months old, babies typically achieve several milestones in their development. Here are some common milestones you might expect:

  1. Motor Skills:

    • Sitting Up: By this age, many babies can sit up without support for short periods of time.
    • Rolling Over: They might be able to roll from their back to their tummy and vice versa.
    • Grasping: They can pick up objects with their hands and might transfer objects from one hand to another.
  2. Communication:

    • Babbling: Babies at this age often babble with consonant-vowel combinations like "ba-ba" or "da-da".
    • Responding to Sounds: They might turn their head toward sounds they hear or respond to their name being called.
    • Imitating Sounds: Some babies may start to imitate sounds or gestures they observe.
  3. Social and Emotional Development:

    • Interest in Faces: Babies become more interested in faces and might smile or laugh in response to familiar people or playful interactions.
    • Separation Anxiety: Some babies might start to show signs of separation anxiety when their caregivers leave.
    • Exploration: They become more curious about their surroundings and might explore objects by touching, shaking, or banging them.
  4. Feeding:

    • Introduction to Solid Foods: Many babies start to explore solid foods around 6 months old, so by 7 months, they may be experimenting with a variety of textures and flavors.
    • Improved Hand-Eye Coordination: Babies may start to feed themselves finger foods or hold a bottle with assistance.
  5. Sleep:

    • Sleep Patterns: By this age, babies might start to develop more regular sleep patterns, though every baby is different, and sleep habits can vary widely.

It's important to note that all babies develop at their own pace, so if your baby hasn't reached all of these milestones exactly by 7 months, it's usually not cause for concern. However, if you have concerns about your baby's development, it's always a good idea to discuss them with your pediatrician or GP.
