Booking your Newborn Session This Autumn

Booking a newborn photography session is a beautiful way to capture those first precious moments with your new baby. As the seasons change, particularly during September and October, the demand for newborn photography peaks. These months are among the busiest for photographers, making early booking essential to secure your spot. If you’re considering a session this autumn, here’s how to prepare, what to bring, and ways to personalise your experience, especially with the stunning autumn colours.

Why Early Booking is Essential in September and October

September and October are some of the most popular months for newborn photography. These months fill up quickly in my calendar, so it’s crucial to book your session as early as possible—ideally in your second or early third trimester. This ensures you secure a date within the ideal window for newborn photography, which is typically within the first 5-14 days after birth. During this period, babies are still very sleepy and easier to pose, allowing me to capture those adorable, curled-up poses that are iconic in newborn sessions.

How to Prepare for Your Newborn Session

Preparation is key to a smooth and successful newborn session, especially during the busy autumn months. Here’s how to get ready:

  1. Timing: As mentioned, the first two weeks are ideal for newborn photography. Booking in advance allows you to secure a date during this critical window. Keep me updated on your due date and reach out as soon as your baby arrives to confirm the session.
  2. Feeding: To help your baby settle and stay sleepy during the session, plan to feed them just before it begins. Have extra milk on hand, whether it’s breast milk or formula, for any top-ups that might be needed during the shoot.
  3. Studio Temperature: I keep the studio warm to ensure your baby is comfortable during the session. Dress in light layers so that you can stay comfortable too, even if the room feels a bit warmer than usual.
  4. Seasonal Props and Outfits: Autumn is a perfect time to incorporate the season’s rich colours into your session. Many photographers provide props, blankets, and outfits in earthy tones like deep reds, oranges, and browns. These colours not only complement the season but also create a warm, timeless feel in your photos. If you have any personal items in these colours, feel free to bring them along.

While I will provide most of what’s needed, there are a few items you should bring to ensure your session goes smoothly:

  1. Extra Nappies and Wipes: Accidents happen, especially during newborn sessions. Having plenty of nappies and wipes on hand is essential.
  2. A Dummy: Even if your baby doesn’t regularly use one, a pacifier can be a helpful tool to soothe your baby during the session.
  3. A Change of Clothes: For both you and your baby. Newborn sessions can get a bit messy, so having an extra set of clothes is always a good idea.
  4. Personal Items: If you want to incorporate special items like a blanket knitted by grandma or a favourite stuffed animal, bring these along. Personal items add a unique touch to your photos and make them even more meaningful.

How to Personalise Your Newborn Session

Your newborn session should reflect your family’s unique story. Here’s how to add personal touches, especially with the autumn season in mind:

  1. Incorporate Family Heirlooms: Including a family heirloom or sentimental item in your newborn session can add a deeply personal element to your photos. This could be anything from a piece of jewellery passed down through generations to a handmade quilt.
  2. Include Siblings or Pets: If you have other children or pets, consider including them in the session. Capturing your entire family together with the new baby can result in some truly special images.
  3. Autumn Theme or Color Scheme: Autumn offers a rich palette of colors that can make your newborn photos truly stand out. We can incorporate seasonal elements like cozy blankets in earthy tones, fall-themed props, or even outdoor shots if the weather permits. These touches can create a warm, inviting atmosphere that beautifully reflects the time of year.
