Bumps to Babies: Photographing the first year of a baby's life: 12 months

Some of the milestones for a 12-month-old baby are:

  • Walking alone or with support
  • Imitating others' activities and sounds
  • Pointing, waving goodbye and clapping
  • Having 1 to 8 teeth
  • Understanding simple instructions with or without gestures
  • Enjoying joint playtime with adults and toys
  • Experiencing separation anxiety
  • Drinking milk and eating solid foods

At 12 months, babies reach significant developmental milestones that mark their transition from infancy to toddlerhood. Here are some typical milestones you might observe in a 12-month-old:

  1. Physical Development:

    • Standing alone or with minimal support.
    • Taking a few steps independently (some babies may even start walking confidently).
    • Crawling or cruising around furniture.
  2. Fine Motor Skills:

    • Using pincer grasp to pick up small objects.
    • Trying to feed themselves with fingers or a spoon.
    • Scribbling with crayons or markers.
  3. Language and Communication:

    • Saying a few words like "mama," "dada," or other simple sounds that represent objects or people in their environment.
    • Understanding simple commands or gestures, like "wave bye-bye" or "give me the toy."
    • Babbling with inflection, mimicking the rhythm of conversation.
  4. Social and Emotional Development:

    • Showing attachment to familiar caregivers.
    • Displaying a range of emotions such as joy, frustration, and excitement.
    • Engaging in simple games like peek-a-boo or pat-a-cake.
  5. Cognitive Development:

    • Exploring objects by banging, shaking, or dropping them.
    • Understanding basic cause-and-effect relationships (e.g., if they drop a toy, it falls to the ground).
    • Showing interest in picture books or simple interactive toys.
  6. Feeding and Eating:

    • Transitioning to solid foods and self-feeding with fingers or utensils.
    • Drinking from a cup with some assistance.
    • Demonstrating preferences for certain foods and showing signs of hunger and fullness.
  7. Sleep Patterns:

    • May be consolidating naps into one or two longer periods during the day.
    • Sleeping around 11-14 hours per day, including nighttime sleep and naps.

Remember, every baby develops at their own pace, so there can be variations in when these milestones are reached. If you have concerns about your child's development, it's always best to consult with a pediatrician or healthcare provider for guidance.
