Live Doula Q&A with Jane Wallington from Breeze Birthing

If you don't already know about it, I recently set up a pregnancy and new Mummy support group during the Coronavirus outbreak, which you can read about here. Within this I've set up virtual events so you don't miss out on your usual classes and appointments during this time, you can see all future upcoming events here.

Our 4th online event was a live Doula Q & A session with Jane Wallington from Breeze Birthing. These questions are suggestions of things you will may or may be interested in finding out about that can help if you are unsure what to ask a doula

What is a Doula?

A Doula is a knowledgeable companion that supports the birth family through labour, birth and postpartum care. The desire to have a Doula is becoming a popular choice as vital elements of care have been lost from the process of childbirth. Stretched resources mean there often isn’t continuity in providing nurturing care for the new mother, to guide by experience and help with the practicalities that need to be performed before, during and after a woman gives birth to her baby.

Benefits of a Doula

Continuous support research shows that in having a Doula at your birth, can:

  • Shorten your labour by an average of 2 hours

  • Reduce the risk of having a cesarean section by 50%

  • Reduce the risk of needing ventouse or forceps assisted delivery by 30%

  • Reduce the need for pain medication

  • Reduce anxiety for both mum and birth partner

  • Help birth partners support with confidence

  • Increase success in breastfeeding

  • Reduce the risk of postnatal depression (PND)

  • Increase mother-baby bonding
